"Emerging at the close of WWII, Abstract Expressionism was a creative earthquake that altered the landscape of modern art, generating revolutionary new approaches to scale, mark-making and composition."--Kate Siegel

From the 1930's--1960's, Abstract Expressionism offers painters a wealth of examples of artists who gave themselves permission to INVENT and DISCOVER while painting. This course will cover this revolutionary period in painting spotlighting key artists in the movement and appropriating palette, treatment of positive/negative space and scale considerations on both primed and unprimed surfaces, and with both traditional and nontraditional materials and tools.

Materials: Oil or water based house paint/enamel (choose water-based OR oil-based as a focus), unprimed surfaces (your choice, canvas, paper, wood), rags (plus more rags), extra large pad of paper palettes,  traditional (brushes, palette knives) and/or untraditional (sticks, plaster/drywall spreader, housepainting brushes, garden/kitchen tools, buckets/bowls/vessels) and odorless spirits or turpentine (if working in oil).
