The Art House presents: An Education, an exhibition featuring a selection of works created by visual artist Sarah Rieser, in recognition of her 2013 completion of the Certificate in Fine Arts from The Art House . Curated by Rebecca George, the one-night-only opening is Friday, July 15th, 2016 from 6pm to 9pm at Arts on Elston Gallery in Avondale.

Sarah Rieser is currently completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Born and raised thirty miles southwest of the city, her art practice is a thematic exploration of consumption-related suburban dystopia. Rieser’s work conveys elements of humor, irony, and ennui by using traditional, labor-intensive processes to transform disposable, mass-produced materials. She creates mixed media art that confronts the wastage of planned obsolescence and the fetishization of religious imagery while introducing questions of taste, feminine labor, and prescriptive reliance on the nondurable.

PRESS RELEASE: TURN THE OTHER EYE: A CURATED ART PARTY is a one-night only gallery opening of 200 new paintings and drawings by Chicago artist Rebecca George.  Exhibition is designed by Beth Borum. Foreword in exhibition catalog by Art Institute of Chicago Adjunct Lecturer and Art Historian Virginia Voedisch. Exhibition is co-curated by Arthur Connor, Christine Connor, Mary Dorrell, JoAnn Hayden and Ken Hogrefe.


Rebecca George is a professional artist and adjunct faculty at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and The University of Chicago. In 2012, Rebecca Founded and currently directs The Art House, a gallery and working studio for serious artists studying painting, drawing and printmaking. Rebecca graduated with honors from The Chicago Academy for the Arts (1990), was Valedictorian and speaker at her BFA graduation ceremony from Maryland Institute, College of Art, where she studied fine arts on a full scholarship (1993). In 2007, Rebecca graduated with a MS in Business from Spertus Institute and went on to receive scholarships and a MFA in Painting and Drawing from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2011). She actively exhibits, teaches andcurates, engaging with diverse artist communities to broaden and enrich her studio practice. Rebecca George has been featured in many publications including the Chicago Sun-Times, Gaper's Block, Parallel Planets and the Les Femmes Folles Anthology.

ARCHIVE: Chicago Artists Month: WORDS MATTER

Exhibit Dates: October 3 - 29, 2015

DESCRIPTION: Artists’ Books are a unique artform and a challenging medium to display in traditional art shows. They are often under glass, and the viewer has access to only the spread selected by the show installers, or the cover.  This one month long Book Arts Library exhibit will allow cover to cover access to handmade books. Also on display will be the work of printers, painters, photographers and others who use words or text as the basis of their artwork.

MEDIA: This exhibit is primarily for handmade book and paper artists who are willing to have their work handled (in a supervised setting), so that they can show the book as a whole. We are seeking artist books, book sculptures or objects, broadsides, sculptural books, zines, graphic novels and comics. 

To submit work: Please send a high res photo of your work to, with a description of the work as you would like it to appear in the catalogue.

Archive: Juried Group Show

Contemporary Art of the Midwest

The Art House is now accepting submissions for this unique group show, juried by Arthur Connor, Director of Arts on Elston and Rebecca George, Director of The Art House. The exhibition will feature works by artists from the Midwestern states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. All 2-D and 3-D mediums of any scale will be considered. One entry per artist. 

DEADLINE EXTENDED: October 23, 2015

FAR-FLUNG will be curated by Rebecca George, Founder/Director of The Art House and Faculty at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Arthur Connor, Owner/Director of Arts on Elston gallery. The exhibition will be held at Arts on Elston gallery which is located on the 3446 N Albany in Chicago and will be publicized.

Opening Reception: June 6, 2015, 2-7 PM 

The jury for this prestigious, first annual “Art by America, A National Review of Two-Dimensional Contemporary Art” project is James Yood and Ginny Voedisch. The national exhibition featuring 250 artworks will be curated by Rebecca George, Founder/Director of The Art House and Faculty at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Arthur Connor, Owner/Director of Arts on Elston gallery. The exhibition will span both galleries which are located on the 3400 block of North Albany in Chicago, and will be a well-publicized event. 

All proceeds from sales will go to the artist.

Artists participating in this project will have their work reviewed and curated by an insightful and professional panel of jurors and artists who will 1.) Assess the trends and traditions of 2-D fine art by practicing artists residing in America, 2.) Designate awards and cash prizes in each category: The Juror’s Award, The Art House Award, Best in Show, and Honorable Mention; 3.) Identify 250 2-D artworks from artists across the country to participate in a curated, month-long, on-site exhibition that spans two Chicago galleries in the Avondale art district, and 4.) Include multiple press releases and a published exhibition review.
